Who are they?
Shoni and Jude Schimmel are Native American sisters of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Pendleton, Oregon.
What did they do?
The Schimmel sisters are basketball players. They came up playing a style of basketball called rezball, which is popular on Native American reservations. After being featured in the documentary Off The Rez when they were still in high school, both sisters went on to attend and play for the University of Louisville. After graduating, Shoni was drafted to the WNBA where she played for the Atlanta Dream.
Her sister Jude wrote a book, got to interview President Barack Obama, and launched a professional basketball career in Spain.
Why do they matter?
After generations of suffering, racial discrimination and poverty, many Native Americans don't leave the reservations they grew up on. These two young women made it their goal to leave, to thrive, and to inspire their people to strive for more. They love and respect their roots, and their fans, across all tribes, love them for it.
