Who is She?
Dr. Mae Jemison is an African American physician, engineer and astronaut.
What did She do?
Inspired by the fictional character Lt. Uhura on the show Star Trek, a young Mae Jemison dreamed of becoming an astronaut and going to space. She worked hard, and in 1992, that dream came true. Dr. Jemison was the first Black woman to leave the Earth’s orbit and go to space.
When she returned, Dr. Jemison shifted gears and founded the Jemison Group, Inc. , a consulting firm which works to improve healthcare in West Africa and consider the socioeconomic impacts of technology. She is a strong advocate for getting minority students interested in science.
Why does She matter?
Dr. Jemison appeared in newspapers, magazines and on TV when it was announced that she would go to space. All of this press changed who people thought of when they pictured a scientist. By just doing her job, she inspires young people of color to dream bigger than they thought possible and to bring their voices and experiences to technologies that change the world.
